One of the things I’ve been asked about a lot since the wedding is the reading we selected which was read by one of my besties, Stacy. So I thought I would share it, and share why I love it so much.
It’s very special to me.
Shortly after my divorce, after I had moved out into my own apartment, I rented a movie one night, and snuggled up on my sofa to watch it with my cats. That movie was Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. I had no idea what it was about aside from the couple of sentences on the back cover of the DVD, and It’s not my favorite movie or anything, it was just alright… But there was this one part of the movie where two of the characters are discussing love… And thus began my love affair with this quote… I remember thinking: “YES!! That IS what love is… And man, I hope I find it someday…” I must have watched that part of the movie about eleven times before finally letting it finish.
Eventually, I looked up the quote from the book, and as I had suspected, it was longer and much more complete, especially the ending… But there was a sweetness to the movie quote that I adored. So, for our wedding I used a combination of both quotes together…
“Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then it subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being “in love,” which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what’s left over when being in love has burned away. It doesn’t sound very exciting, does it? But it is. It is both an art and a fortunate accident, and when you find it, you will see that your roots grew towards each other underground. And when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from your branches you will find that you are one tree, and not two.”
My favorite part is this…

Thank you Stacy for reading my most favorite quote… And thank you for choking up at my most favorite part. It get’s me every time too…
