Just a few shots of the newly emerged monarch we encountered during our little nature walk the other day… Something so very inspiring about finding this little butterfly when he was so new his wings were still curled up from being inside his chrysalis. And as he slowly stretched them out, and flapped them open-closed-open-closed, he seemed so oblivious to my giant macro lens, that I wondered if he'd crawl onto my hand…

YEP! That actually happened!! It was as if he knew I simply wanted to appreciate him, not eat him… After a moment I very carefully placed him back into the bush where I found him, and the rest of the day, I thought about how COOL nature really can be…

Good luck, little butterfly!

Jen - These pictures are so incredible.
jenn shurkus - seriously!!!??? you are ridiculous with a capital R… but i love ya anyways
now im wondering about the butterfly… why is it starting its life now when its going to be cold out!!!??? (and how did it go with the baby squirrel?? ) (and yes im still thinking about the random old dog i saw wandering the streets of providence yesterday….)
sj - Not sure Jenn, but this is the time of year they “hatch,” which I only know because Keegan is learning about them in school, so there’s been a lot of handouts coming home.
The squirrel was set free on Saturday, and we haven’t seen him since… But he was healthy and raring to go when we opened the cage… I hope he’s doing well!
